About This Category

Correct phase sequence is important when installing and maintaining three-phase electrical equipment. Phase rotation testers allow electricians and engineers to identify the order of the phases and determine the direction of the rotating field before equipment is put into operation.

An incorrect phase sequence can cause three-phase motors and other rotating equipment to run in the opposite direction to that intended. Checking phase rotation during installation or after wiring changes can therefore help prevent incorrect motor direction and the operational problems it may cause in pumps, fans, compressors and other machinery.

Depending on the model, a phase rotation tester may indicate phase sequence using LEDs, an LCD display or directional symbols. Some instruments can also identify missing or open phases, while models with motor rotation functions can help determine the expected direction of rotation before a motor is connected to the supply.

When choosing a phase rotation tester, consider its operating voltage and frequency range, indication method and whether motor rotation testing is required. Lead configuration, phase presence indication and audible or visual alerts may also be useful when carrying out installation and maintenance work.

Phase sequence testing is often carried out alongside other electrical installation measurements. Browse our multifunction installation testers or view the complete electrical testers range for related testing equipment.
