About This Category
Refractometers determine the concentration of a solution by measuring how light is refracted as it passes through a liquid sample. Because only a small amount of sample is typically required, refractometry provides a fast and practical testing method for production, quality control and field applications.
One of the most common refractometer measurements is Brix (°Bx), which is widely used to estimate the concentration of dissolved sugars in aqueous solutions. Brix refractometers are therefore commonly used when testing fruit, juices, soft drinks, syrups, jams and other food and beverage products. They can help producers monitor raw materials, processing and product consistency without requiring complex laboratory procedures.
Refractometers are not limited to sugar measurement. Instruments with application-specific scales can be used to assess other liquids and solutions, including automotive coolant, antifreeze and industrial fluids. Choosing the correct instrument therefore depends on the substance being tested, the required measurement scale and the expected concentration range.
Both optical and digital refractometers can provide convenient on-site measurements. Digital models display the result electronically and can simplify reading and interpretation, while handheld optical instruments offer a straightforward method for routine testing. Automatic temperature compensation is another useful feature where temperature variations could influence measurement results.
For applications where Brix measurement forms part of broader produce quality assessment, firmness can provide another useful indicator of fruit maturity and condition. See our fruit firmness testers, or browse all environmental testers available from Techno London.
