About This Category
Temperature cannot always be measured safely or conveniently with a contact probe. Infrared thermometers detect infrared energy emitted from a surface and convert it into a temperature reading, allowing measurements to be taken from a distance without touching the target.
This non-contact measurement method is useful when inspecting hot equipment, moving components, electrical systems, heating and ventilation equipment, refrigerated areas and other surfaces where direct contact may be difficult or undesirable. Measurements can be taken quickly at multiple points, making infrared instruments particularly practical for inspection and troubleshooting work.
When using an infrared thermometer, distance-to-spot ratio is an important consideration. It determines the size of the area being measured at a given distance from the target. For smaller objects or measurements taken from further away, an instrument with a suitable optical ratio helps ensure that the intended surface fills the measurement area.
Emissivity also affects infrared temperature measurement because different surface materials emit infrared energy differently. Instruments with adjustable emissivity can provide greater flexibility when measuring a variety of materials, while laser targeting can help the user identify the approximate area being measured. Temperature range, accuracy and response time should also be considered when choosing an instrument.
Infrared measurement provides the surface temperature of a target rather than its internal or core temperature. Where a probe needs to be inserted into food, liquids or other materials, our immersion thermometers provide direct contact measurement.
